Looking at the ingredients in greater detail:

Chromium: Chromium plays an important role in insulin production, which is key to the regulation of blood sugar levels. Chromium is also involved in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. As such, the inclusion of chromium in any weight loss product could potentially be beneficial. However, the clinical studies that have been performed on chromium have given variable results; some have demonstrated that it has a subtle effect on weight reduction, and others have shown that it has no effect at all. Chromium has been suggested to be able to help increase energy levels and promote fat loss by balancing blood sugar levels.

Vanadium: An element similar to chromium, though vanadium has not been studied for its effects on weight loss. Researchers at the University of British Columbia have discovered that vanadium salts stimulate the uptake of glucose in rats without raising insulin levels (Science 1985;227:1474-1477). They came to the conclusion that vanadium enables the entry of insulin into cells which increased insulin utilization. A number of recent US studies using vanadium compounds have shown positive results in lowering insulin levels in patients with diabetes. So, vanadium appears to be useful in terms of promoting the utilization of glucose. There is a connection between insulin utilization and weight control. This is why compounds that control blood glucose (such as vanadium) are now being evaluated in the promotion of weight loss in type II diabetics. In fact, the reason that many people suffer from diabetes is because they are over weight. Optimal insulin utilization is a key factor in reducing fatty deposits in the body.

Advantra-Z: This is a patented form of Synephrine, an alkaloid that is derived from Citrus aurantium. It is considered as a safe alternative to the now banned Ephedra and is believed to promote thermogenesis. Synephrine has replaced Ephedra in many popular fat burners. Manufacturers claim that Synephrine provides the “fat burning” effects of Ephedra, but without side effects such as sleeplessness, jitters, elevated blood pressure, etc. However, there are studies that indicate that Synephrine can elevate blood pressure and heart rate (e.g. Ann. Pharmacother. 2006;40(1):53-57).

Garcinia cambogia: The active ingredient in Garcinia cambogia is hydroxycitric acid (HCA). This fruit is native to India and has been a part of the diet there for centuries. Initially it was believed that HCA was a promising carb blocker and that it could increase the feelings of satiety (fullness). Unfortunately, research has not borne this out. A study (JAMA 1998;280(18):1596-1600) concluded that Garcinia cambogia failed to produce significant weight and fat mass loss. Another study (Physiol Behav 2000;71(1-2):87-94) did not support a satiety effect for HCA.

Green tea: There is some evidence that green tea offers benefits to dieters. Most studies have demonstrated that it is one essential catechin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), working in combination with caffeine that provides the weight loss benefits. Unfortunately, the manufacturer of AccuSLIM does not reveal what their green tea is standardized for, so it is impossible to assess the value it adds to the formulation. Green tea may also slow the increase in blood sugar following a meal. It does this by inhibiting the action of a digestive enzyme amylase. This enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of carbohydrates, which can cause blood sugar levels to increase following a meal. Green tea has been reported to promote modest weight loss by increasing the metabolic rate, boosting calorie burn (e.g. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2005; 81(1): 122-129).

Ginseng: Ginseng has long been used in Chinese medicine, and is probably the world’s best known herb. It has traditionally been used as a restorative tonic to increase energy, stamina and well being. Western scientists have confirmed the efficacy of ginseng for many of the traditional uses. Now researchers have found that ginseng may be effective in promoting weight loss and diabetes control. A study reported in the journal Phytomedicine investigated whether the crude saponins from the stems and leaves of Panax quinquefolium prevented obesity in mice. Female mice were fed a fattening diet with or without saponins for 8 weeks. The researchers found that the crude saponins inhibited pancreatic lipase activity. With long-term administration of crude saponins, fat tissue weight was decreased as compared to the controls. A number of randomized clinical study have reported that ginseng is useful in improving diabetes control, reducing associated risk factors such as hyperlipidemia and hypertension, and ameliorating insulin resistance. It is important to note that no clinical studies have yet been carried out with regard to ginseng and the promotion of weight loss.

Rhodiola rosea: This ingredient is included among a class of plant derivatives called adaptogens which differ from chemical stimulants, such as nicotine, and do not have the same physiological effects. Rhodiola may be effective at improving mood and alleviating depression. Pilot studies on human subjects have shown that it improves physical and mental performance, and reduces fatigue. However, there is no current clinical evidence that Rhodiola facilitates weight loss.

Eleuthero: Eleutherococcus senticosus or Eleuthero is the plant commonly referred to as Siberian ginseng. Eleuthero has a long history of use in Siberia and China. It has been used as a therapeutic agent, credited with increasing the length and quality of life, preventing infections, improving memory and stimulating appetite. Medicinal actions attributed to Eleuthero include functioning as an adaptogen, antioxidant, chemoprotective agent, immunomodulator, hypertensive (in a hypotensive state) and cardiotonic and general tonic. Eleuthero has no reported use as a weight loss promoting supplement.

Accuslim conclusion

Like many diet pills on the market Accuslim has not been independently tested. Citrus aurantium is not a proven, safe or effective substitute for Ephedra, contrary to what the manufacturer states on the official Accuslim website. While Citrus aurantium may be safer than Ephedra, it has been shown to elevate blood pressure and body temperature and it is not advisable to take this compound long-term. Due to the high stimulant content Accuslim should not be taken without first taking medical advice. There are mixed user reviews (both positive and negative) concerning the effectiveness of Accuslim in promoting weight loss. There have been no clinical trials or studies to indicate that Accuslim is effective.
