CLA Extreme, manufactured by Now Foods, is a fat burner which combines the fat burning abilities of conjugated linoleic acid with L-carnitine, guarana and green tea extract. Both of these latter two ingredients contain caffeine and could have side effects. There are weight loss supplements available which contain similar ingredients to those in CLA Extreme. There is no evidence that CLA Extreme is more or less effective than these other similar products.
How does CLA Extreme work?
CLA is a nonessential fatty acid present in relatively low concentrations in meat, cheese and other dairy products. A clinical study found that CLA, taken at doses of up to 4.5 grams daily, can reduce body fat in overweight individuals (Am J Clin Nutr. 2007: 85(5);1203-11). In a recent study overweight adults were given 3.2 grams of CLA daily or a placebo. Those taking the CLA experienced a 5.6% drop in body fat over the 6-month course of the study. CLA Extreme contains 750 mg per serving and a full daily dose of 1.5 grams is at the lower end of CLA doses shown to promote weight loss.

CLA Extreme ingredients
Chromium picolinate: Chromium is involved in the processes of carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. Its inclusion in any weight loss formulation is beneficial. However, the clinical studies that have been carried out on chromium have been inconclusive; some demonstrating that it had a subtle effect on weight loss and others showing that it was ineffective.
Green tea extract: Research has indicated that the active ingredient in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate, is a powerful oxidant. Green tea may also slow the increase in blood sugar following a meal. It does this by inhibiting the action of a digestive enzyme known as amylase. This enzyme is key to the breakdown of carbohydrates, which can cause blood sugar levels to increase following a meal. Green tea has been reported to promote weight loss by increasing the metabolic rate, boosting calorie burn (e.g. Am J Clin Nutr. 2005; 81(1): 122-129). Unfortunately, the amount of green tea CLA Extreme is low at 50 mg per serving.
Guarana: An established thermogenic with clinically demonstrated benefits for weight loss (e.g. Am J Clin Nutr. 1989; 49(1):44-50, Am J Clin Nutr. 1980; 33(5):989-997), although some findings indicates that it offers greater benefits to lean individuals that to those who are overweight (Am J Physiol. 1995; 269(4 Pt 1):E671-8). Guarana also provides an energy boost. It is included in many fat burners because of its caffeine content and diuretic properties. The amount of guarna present per serving is 75 mg.
L-Carnitine: Carnitine plays an important role in at the cellular level in the metabolism of fatty acids to provide energy. Studies to date have not convincingly demonstrated that carnitine supplementation can significantly boost calorie burn. Most fat burners contain far lower levels of carnitine than the 2-6 grams daily that have been evaluated in clinical studies, and CLA Extreme is no exception. It contains a mere 100 mg of carnitine.
Other ingredients: Gelatin, glycerin, water, yellow beeswax, soy lecithin and carob.
CLA Extreme side effects
In a minority of individuals taking CLA can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. Chromium piccolate can moderate the amount of glucose in the bloodstream. It is advisable for diabetic individuals to seek medical advice in deciding whether they can take CLA Extreme. The caffeine in green tea and guarana could cause side effects such as restlessness or jitters in sensitive individuals.
Is CLA Extreme effective?
The concentrations of the ingredients in the CLA extreme formulation are relatively low. On a positive note CLA is clinically proven as a weight loss supplement. CLA Extreme is cheap enough to use at higher dosages than those recommended by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, CLA Extreme has not been evaluated clinically and not testimonials are provided by the manufacturer. It is therefore difficult to assess the effectiveness of this weight loss product. There are weight loss supplements available which contain similar ingredients to those in CLA Extreme. There is no evidence that CLA Extreme is more or less effective than these other similar products.
