Clinicallix is a caffeine heavy diet pill containing guarana and yerba mate. Taken at the recommended dosage this amounts to approximately 400 mg of caffeine or about 5 cups of coffee every day. The dieter who is trying to cut out caffeine, or who is sensitive to caffeine or other stimulants will certainly feel the caffeine jolt and may experience side effects. On the official website there is no indication of who manufactures Clinicallix, or their quality control procedures. No physical address is provided. The ingredients in Clinicallix do not offer anything particularly novel.

Clinicallix ingredients
Clinicallix contains 3 ‘compounds’. Stacking is relatively common in weight loss and body building circles. Stacking is a term that is defined as taking several supplements simultaneously to reach the desired goal. The Clinicallix website reveals how the manufacturer believes that stacking three compounds is more effective that taking just one proprietary blend. Each 5 capsule serving consists of:
Compound 1
Guarana (750 mg). Guarana is a common ingredient in many popular stimulant-based weight loss pills. Guarana is included primarily for its caffeine content (caffeine is a potent thermogenic agent) but it also has anti-oxidant and diuretic properties. Harvested in Brazil and Uraguay, this wild-growing climbing shrub has been used for centuries as a general health-tonic and recently as an energizing drink. There is clinical evidence supporting caffeine’s effects on weight loss (e.g. Am J Clin Nutr. 1989.49(1):44-50; Am J Physiol. 1995. 269(4 Pt 1):E671-8).
Yerba Mate (400 mg). A South American shrub that contains the xanthine alkaloids caffeine, theobromine and theophylline. Yerba mate contains about half the caffeine of coffee. Theobromine and theophylline are stimulants, although they have a less potent effect on the central nervous system (CNS) than caffeine. Yerba mate is also a source of chlorogenic acid, a compound which may have some weight loss properties. In one study, yerba mate combined with guarana and damiana resulted in delayed gastric emptying and an increased feeling of fullness (J Hum Nutr Diet. 2001.14(3):243-50).
Damiana (200 mg). A shrub that grows in the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is believed to be a strong aphrodisiac with a variety of reported effects on both the hormonal and reproductive systems. Damiana herb has also been used as a general tonic for both men and women, particularly when hormone-related conditions are present. The herb also has antidepressant, anti-anxiety, diuretic and mild laxative effects.
There is some evidence that a combination of these 3 ingredients can delay gastric emptying, generating a prolonged feeling of fullness and thus reducing appetite (J Hum Nutr Diet. 2001.14(3):243-50).
Compound 2
Glucomannan (1000 mg). This is essentially a soluble fiber supplement. Studies have shown that glucomannan can promote weight loss by absorbing dietary fats. One study (Int J Obes. 1984. 8(4):289-93) demonstrated that 1 gram of glucomannan taken with 8 ounces of water one hour before meals resulted in the loss of 6 pounds in weight over a 2 month period. Glucomannan can bind with and hinder the absorption of certain nutrients, meaning that it may adversely influence the effectiveness of the other ingredients in this formula.
Compound 3
Garcinia cambogia fruit extract (1500 mg). A full day’s dosage of 10 capsules of Clinicallix (3000 mg) is close to the amount used in one positive clinical study (J Med. 2004;35(1-6):33-48). However, subjects involved in this study were restricted to 2,000 calories per day. They also walked for 30 minutes per day, 5 days out of 7. Considered overall, the limited clinical data on garcinia cambogia fruit extract indicates that it can promote weight loss, but not dramatically.
Gymnema sylvestre (75 mg). This is a woody climbing plant native to tropical regions of India. Its bitter leaves can eliminate the ability to taste sugar, thereby reducing cravings for sugar. Gymnema sylvestre has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine since the 6th century B.C. It is believed that this herb has antiviral and lipid lowering properties. Gymnema sylvestre may also offer health benefits for individuals with diabetes mellitus. Based on limited information Gymnema sylvestre is believed to be able to reduce the sugar available in the stomach for absorption, raise insulin levels and block dietary fat absorption. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 8 week-study of 60 overweight subjects, a combination of hydroxycitric acid, niacin-bound chromium and gymnema sylvestre extract facilitated a reduction in body weight and BMI (Preuss HG et al. Diabetes Obes Metab. 2004;6(3):171-80).
Chromium polynicotinate (250 mcg). Chromium plays an important role in insulin production, which is key to the regulation of blood sugar levels. Chromium is also involved in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. As such, the inclusion of chromium in any weight loss product could potentially be beneficial. However, the clinical studies that have been performed on chromium have given variable results; some have demonstrated that it has a subtle effect on weight reduction, and others have shown that it has no effect at all. Chromium has been suggested to be able to help increase energy levels and promote fat loss by balancing blood sugar levels.
