Total Lean Burn 60 ingredients

Two tablets of Total Lean Burn 60 contain the following ingredients:

  • Guarana Seed Extract (36% caffeine = 180mg) (495 mg)
  • Black Tea Leaves Extract (272 mg)
  • MegaNatural Grape Skin and Seed Extract (210 mg)
  • Ginger Root Extract (200 mg)
  • MegaNatural Gold Grape Seed Extract (125 mg)
  • Dill Weed Extract (5 mg)

Other Ingredients: Dextrose, Natural Vanilla Flavor, Cinnamon bark extract, FD&C Yellow 6 Lake, FD&C Red #40 Lake, Titanium Dioxide (Natural Mineral Whitener), Cellulose.

Looking at the ingredients in greater detail:

Guarana Seed Extract: This ingredient is a recognized thermogenic agent with clinically demonstrated benefits for weight loss (e.g. Am J Clin Nutr 1989; 49(1):44-50. Am J Clin Nutr 1980; 33(5):989-997), although some findings indicate that it offers greater benefits to lean individuals that to those who are overweight (Am J Physiol 1995; 269(4 Pt 1):E671-8). Guarana also delivers an energy boost. It is incorporated into many fat burners because of its caffeine content and diuretic properties.

Black Tea Leaves Extract: Extracts from black tea may reduce total cholesterol levels by 9% and LDL cholesterol levels by 12% per cent, according to one clinical study (Nutrition Research. 2008;28:450-456). Consumption of the black tea extract (BTE) at a daily dose of 1000 mg was also associated with beneficial changes in blood levels of triglycerides and body weight. It was postulated that BTE may function by inhibiting the reabsorption of bile acids. By binding to the bile acids the extracts increase the excretion of cholesterol. As a consequence the liver compensates by producing more bile from cholesterol, thereby promoting the lowering of cholesterol levels. It should be noted that the concentration of BTE present in the Total Lean Burn 60 formulation is 272 mg (per serving/2 tablets) which is far lower than the 1000 mg dose used in the clinical trial.

Grape Seed Extract: This extract contains a number of flavonoids and other compounds with significant antioxidant properties. It has been found to be a strong neutralizer of free radicals. A small clinical study has suggested that grape seed extract could be a useful for weight management (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.2004;58:667-673). Researchers found that grape seed extract reduced the calorie intake by 4% over a 24 hour period. However, a long-term trial is needed to find out whether this reduction could be sustained over a longer period and therefore prevent weight gain. In vitro experiments have previously shown that polyphenols, the antioxidants present in high quantities in grape seed extract, stimulate the breakdown of fat. Grape seed extract has also been shown to reduce food intake in rats. Grape seed is believed to delay food absorption, and thus reduce appetite. In addition to mild scalp itching, the National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine states that grape seed extract can cause hives and rare but severe allergic responses.

Ginger Root Extract: Ginger (Zingiber officinale) contains oleoresins that are rich in gingerols. These compounds have a variety of sedative effects. Ginger is traditionally used to calm the stomach and as a treatment for motion sickness. Since some individuals experience gastrointestinal upset with caffeine and other stimulatory chemicals, ginger should help to eliminate this occasional side effect.

Dill Weed Extract: Dill (Anethum graveolens) has been used in traditional herbal medicine for more than 2000 years. The plant is believed to alleviate the symptoms of colds and flu, and has been used to treat various digestive and intestinal problems. Reports relating to the side effects of dill are limited, the most common being dermatitis.

Total Lean Burn 60 clinical study

According to GNC Total Lean Burn 60 has been clinically proven to increase post workout calorie burning by up to 60% for up to one hour. This double blind placebo controlled crossover study consisted of 22 healthy men and women. Participants exercised on a treadmill during two sessions. On the first session they took Total Lean Burn 60 before exercise and on the second session they took a placebo. The amount of calories burned during the first hour post exercise was measured. The subjects were found to burn 60% more calories while taking Total Lean Burn 60 as compared to the placebo. Unfortunately, GNC does not reveal who funded the study and if it has been published. No long-term studies of Total Lean Burn 60 have so far been carried out, and any side effects that may have occurred were not reported in the initial study.

Total Lean Burn 60 conclusion

The GNC Total Lean Burn 60 formulation does not include any significant metabolism-boosting compounds other than a high dose of caffeine in various forms. Due to the high content of this stimulant numerous users have reported sweating profusely during exercise. Therefore, a component of the weight loss that results from taking GNC Total Lean Burn 60 may be due to water loss. The question arises as to why sugar is included in this diet pill and why natural vanilla flavor is added – perhaps to mask the taste of the tablet. Guarana seed extract included in the formulation is a stimulant that increases heart rate and blood pressure. Diet pills commonly include stimulants to help boost metabolism. Black tea leaf extract, another ingredient, also contains caffeine – so GNC Total Lean Burn 60 caffeine loaded. Dill weed and ginger both have digestive calming properties, but do not appear to appreciably stimulate the metabolism. Numerous users have reported side effects, so GNC Total Lean Burn 60 is best avoided by people sensitive to stimulants.
