Lean System 7 claims to offer 450% more weight loss than dieting alone. Research on human subjects completed by Minnesota Applied Research Center supports this claim. However, it is important to note that the study was funded by a research grant from iSatori, the manufacturer of Lean System 7. This study on Lean System 7 can therefore not be viewed as independent. Some users of the Lean System 7 have reported experiencing side effects due, in no small part, to the high caffeine content.

Side effects of Lean System 7
Some users of the Lean System 7 have reported experiencing painful stomach aches, jittery feelings, nausea, insomnia, gas and in some cases severe diarrhea. Even though Lean System 7 might work effectively for some people, without any side effects, the product contains a large amount of caffeine. Yerba mate, green tea and guarana are all ingredients that contain caffeine. There are 700 milligrams of guarana and 500 milligrams of yerba mate in each of bottle of Lean System 7.
Another ingredient, Citrus aurantium, is a component that could pose a health risk as it may cause cardiovascular problems at high doses.
Lean System 7 ingredients
Lean System 7 contains a proprietary blend of 7 fat burning herbal compounds. The exact blend differs slightly depending on the country where Lean System 7 is bought. The Canadian version, for example, does not contain 7-keto because of a difference in laws that regulate supplements.
The Lean System 7 formula contains green tea. There is some evidence that green tea can promote weight loss (Mol Nutr Food Res 2006;50: 176-87; Am J Clin Nutr 81: 122-129; Journal of the International Association for the Study of Obesity 2000;24: 252-8; The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1999;70: 1040-5.
Two other caffeine rich ingredients in Lean System 7 are guarana and yerba mate. The combination of green tea and caffeine can promote weight loss, as shown in one study (Obes Res 2005; 13: 1195-204). Yerba mate has diuretic properties and, when combined with guarana and damiana, has been shown to delay gastric emptying and promote a feeling of fullness.
Lean System 7 also contains Citrus aurantium or bitter orange. Theoretically, Citrus aurantium extracts should promote fat burning since its active ingredients (synephrine and phenylephrine) are both sympathetic alpha agonists. However, clinical data on Citrus aurantium has indicated that at best it promotes moderate weight loss (Ann Pharmacother 2006; 40: 53-7; Obes Rev 2006; 7: 79-88; Am J Cardiol 2004; 94: 1359-61).
Dandelion root/leaf is also included in the formulation for its diuretic properties, as is bioperine, an ingredient which increases the bioavailability of certain ingredients by enhancing gastrointestinal absorption.
Another ingredient in Lean System 7 is 7-keto. This compound is a metabolite of DHEA, a steroid hormone produced naturally in the body. 7-keto displays no apparent side effects (i.e. no conversion to testosterone or estrogen and has no effect on the sex hormones). 7-keto has a positive effect on thyroid hormone levels. However, more studies need to be completed to more convincingly demonstrate 7-keto’s fat burning ability.
The latest version of Lean System 7 now has two new ingredients:
Fucus nodosus (standardized to 10% fucoxanthan): Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid found in seaweed and other marine plants. It is claimed that fucoxanthin can boost metabolism and stimulate fat burning. There are some animal studies that indicate fucoxanthin is beneficial for weight loss.
Pomegranate extract: Preliminary animal studies show promising results with this extract for weight loss (J Agric Food Chem 2007; 55: 3741-8; Nutrition 2006; 22: 54-9; Lipids Health Dis 2004; 3: 24).
Studies on Lean System 7
Lean System 7 is one of the few commercially available weight loss supplements that actually has a peer-reviewed, published clinical trial validating its effectiveness (Nutrition 2005; 2: 179-85). Although Lean System 7 promoted weight loss in 50% of its users, the remainder did not find the product to be effective. Those who did lose weight successfully by using Lean System 7 admitted that the diet pill would not have been as effective without exercise.
